CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Fernando stood in front of his open trunk, a moving box in his arms, as he stared at the green Victorian house with a quizzical expression. âI wonât lie. I pictured it being bigger. More like a mansion.â
âI told you it was modest.â Sadie grabbed a box from the back seat and hefted it onto her hip.
âBut her ex-husband is like one of the richest guys on the planet. Itâs only a matter of time before he builds a rocket to blast off into space.â
âHopefully never to return,â Sadie couldnât help adding. She still hadnât fully recovered from her one encounter with the man and had no desire to repeat it. âJulianna isnât like him, though. Sheâs more down-to-earth.â
âIâm sure. As down-to-earth as someone can be when they hire full-time, live-in staff,â Fernando teased.
âSheâs the head of a tech start-up, and guardianship of her niece basically just fell in her lap a few months ago. Can you blame her?â Sadie countered, feeling the need to defend her employer in a way that almost felt like she was defending herself, too. After all, she couldnât even count the number of times sheâd sworn she would never take a live-in position. Sure, she had during Covid, but she didnât have a choice then because it was the only thing available, and she had to eat. Yet here she was, moving all her worldly possessions into Juliannaâs guest room.
âI suppose not,â Fernando admitted, closing the trunk and following Sadie up the steps to the front door, his arms laden with as many boxes as he could carry. âAs long as you promise this isnât one of those lesbian U-Haul situations.â
âOh my God, Fernando. I canât believe you would even think something like that.â Sadie winced as she heard the shrillness of her tone, knowing this would be a dead giveaway that her best friend was a wee bit closer to the truth than sheâd like to admit.
âHold on a minute.â Fernando slanted his head. âDid something happen between you two? Is that why youâre moving in?â
âIâm moving in because itâs my job.â Sadie pressed the box against the doorframe as she unlocked it with a key, relieved that theyâd finally gotten rid of the fancy code lock that only worked half the time.
âYouâve turned down many live-in situations. Like when that movie star you worked for when they were filming on location in Boston wanted you to move to Beverly Hills.â
âWho would want to live in California when you could be in beautiful Massachusetts?â Sadie set her box down next to the stairs, avoiding his gaze.
âPretty much everyone I know. They have palm trees and perfect weather year-round. We have snow half the year.â Fernando followed her inside, setting the boxes down in the entryway and heading back out for another load. âSeriously, Peps. Whatâs going on between you and the boss lady?â
Fernandoâs eyes bore into Sadie, searching for the truth she wasnât quite ready to admit to herself let alone another living soul.
